Gerbrand Michielsen was born in the Netherlands in 1964 and came to the Azores in 1990. He has been working as a hiking and trekking expert technician for the Azores Regional Directorate of Tourism since 2000. He also works as a consultant in matters related to bird watching in that same institution.
Michielsen fell in love with bird watching in all of the Azores islands, having published several rare photos in foreign magazines such as Birding World and Dutch Birding. He is also a member of the management team of the reference site Birding Azores, coordinated by Staffan Rodebrand. In August, 2008, Michielsen built the first Bird Observatory in the Azores, near Lagoa Branca, in Flores Island. He is also the co-author of the first Bird Watching Guide for the Azores along with Azorean ornithologist Pedro Rodrigues, launched in September, 2010.
